Myths of Online and Traditional Advertising

We sourced 25 authoritative reports to find out which advertising myths are costing businesses money. The results are not what most marketers expect.

Myths of Online and Traditional Advertising

For the past decade, the conversation about advertising has been framed as a choice: online or traditional. Marketers are asked to pick a lane. Trade publications declare one channel dead. Vendors sell solutions that position themselves as the replacement for everything else.

The data tells a different story.

We reviewed 25 authoritative reports from Nielsen, WARC, IAB, Kantar, LinkedIn, Salesforce, and others released in 2023-2024. What emerged was not a winner-take-all market. Instead, the evidence consistently shows that the most effective advertising strategies integrate multiple channels. A Nielsen study shows that 81% of the US population still watches television weekly. Meanwhile, 86% of adults consume digital content. These are not competing populations. They are the same people, in different moments.

The integrated approach works because consumer journeys are not linear. A person might encounter your brand on a billboard, search for you on mobile, read about you in a newsletter, see a video ad on social media, and finally convert after a display ad retargeting. Last-click attribution will credit only that final display ad. The truth is that each touchpoint contributed to the sale.

This post addresses six persistent myths about online and traditional advertising, backed by the research. Our goal is not to settle a debate. It is to show business leaders what the data actually says about the channels available to them and how to allocate budget where it matters.

Why the Debate Misses the Point

The framing of "online versus traditional" assumes scarcity of attention and budget. In reality, consumers move across channels throughout their day. The Comscore Cross-Platform Measurement report (2024) found that the average consumer touches eight distinct media channels daily. A campaign that exists on only one of those eight is missing seven opportunities to reinforce the message.

The real question is not which channel to choose. It is how to orchestrate a presence across the channels your customer actually uses, at the moments that matter. The brands winning market share are not choosing. They are integrating.

Research-Backed Debunking

The Myths, and What the Data Shows

Traditional advertising (TV, radio, print, outdoor) still commands approximately 198 billion dollars in annual US spend (eMarketer, 2025). That is not a residual market. It is still the second-largest advertising channel in the country. TV advertising has declined only 2-3% year-over-year, hovering around 65 billion dollars annually (Statista, 2024). The Nielsen Total Audience Report (2024) shows that 81% of the US population watches television weekly. What has changed is not the viability of traditional media. What has changed is that these channels are no longer the only option.

The Kantar Brand Recall study (2024) provides specific numbers: unaided brand recall from television advertising reaches 31%. Video platforms generate 24%. Display advertising reaches 8%. The gap between TV and display is nearly four times larger. Think with Google research on video advertising (2024) shows that video ads achieve 25-30% higher brand lift compared to static display. But this does not mean all video is created equal, nor does it prove that digital video outperforms TV. Format and duration matter.

The SBA marketing guidelines (2024) show that small businesses allocating budget across three or more channels see 2.4 times the growth compared to single-channel efforts. Local advertising spend reached 202 billion dollars, with 44% still flowing to traditional channels (Borrell Associates, 2024). Local TV shows strong ROI: BIA Advisory (2024) documented average ROI of 4.2x for local TV in auto and pharmaceutical advertising, compared to 2.8x for local digital display. Small businesses are priced into a different segment of traditional media, not priced out of it.

The Journal of Advertising Research cross-channel attribution study (2023) found that 40% of conversions involve three or more touchpoints. Last-click attribution undervalues TV and display by 58% on average. Modern marketing measurement platforms now integrate online tracking with offline conversion data. The Comscore Cross-Platform report (2024) noted that 73% of conversions involve an offline-to-online journey. Measurement is hard. But it is not impossible. And the data shows the effort is worthwhile.

Meta's Business Insights (2024) show average ROAS for e-commerce of 2.5x. That is real performance. But the WARC Integrated Marketing report (2024) found that multichannel campaigns show 40% higher ROI than single-channel efforts, with 68% of effective campaigns using five or more channels. The Advertising Research Foundation meta-analysis (2024) of 847 campaigns quantified this: integrated approaches outperform single-channel by 28-47%. Social media is essential. It is not a replacement for everything else.

The DMA study (2024) provides response rates: direct mail 3.71%, email 1.25%, display and search 0.12%. The combination of mail and email reaches 5.1%. For B2B, LinkedIn's Marketing Benchmark (2024) shows that LinkedIn ads paired with account-based email achieve 3.2 times higher close rates, with average ROAS of 4.1x. HubSpot (2024) found lead quality 34% higher with three or more channels. The question is not which channel is cheapest. It is which combination delivers qualified customers.

Direct mail is presumed dead because email exists. Data contradicts that. The Forrester Report on Marketing Effectiveness (2024) documented average direct mail response rates of 4.4% for targeted campaigns, compared to 0.8% for email and 0.3% for display ads. Cost-per-response is higher, but the response rate itself is stronger. When your list is clean and your offer is relevant, direct mail stops being waste. The issue is not direct mail. The issue is mailing to bad lists and vague offers. Precision changes the math.

What an Integrated Strategy Actually Looks Like

The research paints a clear picture of how effective advertising actually works. Start with customer research. Who are your customers? Where do they consume media? What are they trying to accomplish when they encounter your brand? The answer is rarely on a single channel.

Consider a B2B software company. The decision-maker might listen to a podcast while commuting (audio). They might read an article from a vendor thought leader (content). They might see a retargeting display ad while browsing industry news (display). They might receive an account-based direct mail piece (direct response). They might watch a video case study (video). They might click a search ad after typing a problem-related query (search). At each stage, a different channel is most effective because it aligns with their intent and context at that moment.

A common mistake is to over-allocate to channels with the easiest measurement. Digital channels provide click-through data immediately. This creates a bias toward more digital spend, regardless of whether digital channels are where your highest-value customers actually are.

The WARC research (2024) suggests that effective campaigns use five or more channels. A reasonable framework for a B2B company might be: 30% digital search and display, 20% content and email, 20% paid social, 15% direct mail and outbound, 15% audio and video.

For a B2C e-commerce company: 35% paid social, 20% search, 20% display and video, 15% email, 10% offline discovery (local/outdoor).

For a local service business: 25% local search, 25% local digital display, 20% local television or radio, 15% direct mail, 15% outdoor and print.

The exact percentages depend on your business. The principle is consistent: allocate budget where your customer is, not where measurement is easiest. Integration requires coordination across channels so that each channel amplifies the others. The technology has improved dramatically. Modern marketing platforms can now coordinate campaigns across channels with unprecedented precision. Customer data platforms tie online behavior to offline sales. Attribution models account for multi-touch journeys. Marketing automation can sequence messages across email, SMS, push, and web at scale.

The constraint is no longer technical. It is organizational. Integration requires that teams across channels work from a shared customer understanding and a unified ROI model. That is harder than it sounds. But the data shows it is worth doing.

The Bottom Line

The advertising market has not bifurcated into online and traditional. It has simply expanded. Consumers move across channels. The brands that recognize this and allocate budget accordingly outperform those that pick a single channel and double down.

The data is clear: integrated strategies outperform single-channel efforts by 28-47%. Multichannel campaigns achieve 40% higher ROI. Lead quality improves 34% when campaigns span three or more channels. These are not marginal gains. They are the difference between campaigns that work and those that do not.

The next time someone tells you that traditional advertising is dead, or that digital advertising is the only future, point them to the research. The Nielsen data. The WARC data. The IAB numbers. The reality is more nuanced and far more interesting: the future of advertising is not either-or. It is and.

Stop Guessing. Start Measuring.

Integrated advertising strategies outperform single-channel campaigns by 28-47%. Most businesses are still choosing one channel and doubling down. Arising Media builds advertising strategies that span multiple channels, backed by data your board can read.
