This issue is when a page's non-AMP HTML is missing the required rel="amphtml" link tag that points to its corresponding AMP version, so the AMP/non-AMP pairing is broken or one-directional. It typically happens when the AMP version of a page is generated or updated but the reciprocal link back from the canonical page is never added or falls out of sync. Without a correctly declared amphtml link, Google cannot reliably associate the two versions, which can prevent the AMP version from being served in AMP-eligible search features like the mobile carousel.

Why this happens

This happens when the AMP version of a page is created or updated as a separate build process from the canonical HTML page, and the reciprocal rel="amphtml" link tag that's supposed to point back to its AMP counterpart is never added, or is added once and falls out of sync as pages are edited. AMP pages are frequently generated by a plugin or separate pipeline that doesn't keep the two templates aware of each other, so the pairing has to be manually maintained rather than structurally guaranteed. Content updates made after the AMP version was generated widen this gap if the AMP build isn't re-triggered.
